Headstrong and eccentric Satie consciously distanced himself from the Romantic traditions of the nineteenth century. His three miniatures for piano 'Gymnopédies' are the first testimony to his idea of a 'NewSimplicity': repetitive steady rhythms that are reminiscent of ancient cult dances have their very own meditative charm. Satie’s principle of stringing together musical units rather tha…
Satie?s ?Ogives? und Gymnopédies? are milestones in the history of modern music. The four metrically free ?Ogives? (meaning pointed arches) reflect the influence of the French New Gothic or Neo-Gregorian movement in architecture with their clear lines and echo effects. The three ?Gymnopédies? proceed with a swaying, chordal momentum, and Satie?s radically sparse writing makes ironic reference to t…
Par SATIE ERIK. 3 Gymnopédies by Erik Satie, arranged by Roger Nichols for Violin and Piano, Flute and Piano or Clarinet and Piano. / Nichols / Répertoire / Violon et Piano
The atmospheric cycle 'Avant-dernières Pensées? (Next-to-last Thoughts) of 1915, with its underlaid words, likewise belongs to Satie's 'story pieces'. The curious performance instructions in these three miniatures, all based on ostinato figures, amusingly lampoon the ideal of Romantic expressiveness. This Urtext edition faithfully adheres to the sources and reflects the latest findings of Satie sc…
Par SATIE ERIK. With the five Nocturnes composed in 1919, Satie concluded the series of cyclically organized piano pieces which, in a way, constitute the backbone of his oeuvre. As his models, he chose the eponymous pieces by John Field and Frédéric Chopin, borrowing not only the romantic, elegiac inflections, but also the tripartite form and rocking movement. Totally original, in turn, is the har…
In 1903, Satie composed his famous cycle for piano duet with the provocative and ambiguous title '3 Morceaux en forme de Poire?. (In French, 'poire? means 'pear? but also 'dimwit?). It is a detached and ironic commentary on the constraints of musical form. Now this cycle is being published in a scholarly-critical Urtext edition for the first time. Convenient page turns, a score format, translations…
This collection provides an introduction to keyboard music of the earliest times opening up a field which until recently has been relatively closed to the amateur musician. Beginning with the oldest testimony to the medieval art of organ composition preserved in England about 1350 it focuses on music of the Renaissance and early Baroqoue of whose rich achievements it seeks to give an overall imp…
