Theremini Holiday Special - Artist - Mason Self
inMusic Brands Inc.
Product Description
The Theremini is a re-imagination of one of the oldest electronic musical instruments, and synthesis pioneer Bob Moog's first love: the theremin. Its design fuses the unique experience of playing an instrument you don’t actually touch. The Theremini guarantees immediate success to anyone at any skill level or physical ability, while also providing new ways to experiment with music, education, and gestural control.
The Theremini’s Pitch Correction system allows the Theremini to play the distinct notes and steps of a musical scale; 22 Scales are available, beginning on any of 12 Root notes. This Pitch Correction can be added in any amount, effectively changing the Theremini’s level of playing difficulty to match any performer’s skill.
The Theremini features a built-in speaker, plus a headphone jack for private rehearsal. Based on Moog’s award-winning Animoog synthesizer, the internal sound engine offers 32 presets, each providing a distinctly different tonality, or timbre. In addition, an onboard stereo effects section is provided, adding lush trails or spaciousness to the overall sound of your Theremini.
From the manufacturer
-
The Perfect Introduction
Start playing immediately with assistive pitch correction. With Pitch Correction engaged, only the notes in your selected scale and key will be available on your Theremini.
-
A Musician's Training Tool
Develop your sense of pitch. The built-in tuner uses the LCD to display both the note being played, and to indicate whether the note is being played sharp, flat, or perfectly in tune.
-
Easy Setup
The built-in speaker allows Theremini to deliver quality sound on its own. Set it up and play anywhere without the need for an additional amplifier or speakers.
-
Expressive Sounds
The only theremin equipped with a powerful sound engine derived from Moog's Animoog synthesizer. offers 32 presets, each providing a distinctly different tonality, or timbre.
-
Creative Controller
Pitch/CV output and USB MIDI can control other synthesizers in your setup. Use the Presets knob to select whether the current Pitch Correction setting is applied to the CV out.
-
Software Editor Included
Edit Theremini's presets and access advanced settings with the free theremini editor.
-
Playing the Theremini
The Theremini is played by interacting with two electronic antenna using subtle hand gestures. Control the Volume with the horizontal loop antenna. control the Pitch using the vertical rod antenna.
-
Volume Antenna
Play any note and slowly raise your left hand to raise the volume. Gradually lower your hand toward the antenna to reduce the volume or place your hand very close to mute or activate Auto-mute.
-
Pitch Antenna
Control the pitch or frequency that the Theremini is playing. Place your hand closer to the Pitch antenna to raise/play the highest selected note. Pulling your hand back lowers the pitch frequency.
-
Expressive Volume
Play with your volume hand about three-quarters of the way up. The casual hand or fingers raise makes the volume swell. Dipping your fingers or wrist slightly makes the volume drop.
-
Vibrato
To perform vibrato, simply give your pitch hand a slight wiggle. The trick is learning to sync the back-and-forth motions in a way that are musically appropriate to what you are playing.
-
Light, Delicate Movements
Subtle knuckle movement or pinky extension is all that is required to move to the next note. Spreading out your fingers can raise the pitch with a full octave. Imagine tickling butterflies.

The theremin is VERY difficult to play, if you are looking to play something structured and musical. But it is also super EASY to play, if you want to experience a constant relationship between your body and sound. This requires one to be very aware of the body and to use intuitive movement to relate your body to sound. It is almost like using dance to inspire sound rather than using sound to inspire dance.
Because there are so many presets to experiment with, it is possible to make beautiful improvisational sounds. The other part I love is the display shows you your pitch and allows you to change your root note as well as to set scales to things like "gypsy, spanish, arabian, egyptian" so that the scale has that preset feeling to it. The options are ENDLESS! I just LOVE this unit. And for the very good price point, this unit allows the new theremin student to experience classic theremin playing, as well as just have a great time with improvising sounds. THANK YOU MOOG!
I do recommend the use of headphones for those who do to torture others living in the home. But also because when others in your home hear how interesting and fun the unit is to play with, they all want a turn!!! HAHAHA.
I realized right away that I needed to improve the "theremin" sound. I toyed with the idea of buying an amp, but instead hooked it up to my audio interface (to my studio computer) so it plays out of my good speakers. Immediate, awesome improvement in the sound. The bonus is, I can record it as an audio track directly into Sonar, to mix with harp tracks, etc. That is...if I DO get good enough at actually playing it.
The theremini makes practicing more fun because of all of the experimentation you can do. And you can turn the dial so it hits the notes more easily, which is helpful in the beginning for sure.
The editing software works fine. If you like the chromatic scale and are tired of endless turning the dial to get it when playing some of your favorite "presets," you can use the editing software to save it so that the chromatic scale automatically comes up when you go to a particular preset. You can also replace any of the presets on your theremini with others. You can find dozens of presets for the Theremini, load them into the software, and put them on the Theremini if you so desire. If I can only learn to play, this instrument will be very useful in my work.
The two things I didn't like are trivial to fix; 1) the case screws are black oxide coated, which means they look like drywall screws; and I don't like that look. Get yourself four chrome or stainless-steel flathead 6-32 screws about 20mm (3/4") long and replace them if you're like me and don't like them. (2) the antennas are not prefilled with epoxy or polyester as Robert Moog himself recommended. That's an easy fix too.
You will need a mike stand and an external amplifier for the Etherwaves. I also recommend you get a travel case; I got the premium (hardshell) MOOG-branded case and I have no regrets; the Etherwave is well built but I want to protect it in transit anyway.
How easy is it to play? Let's just say it's a challenge. I've played ribbon synths and such before, so I'm no stranger to fretless electronic instruments, but the theremin gives you no physical reference at all (you don't touch it while you play). I'm still learning.
A few more things:
1) go on YouTube, type in "theremin", and see what one of these puppies can really do in the hands
of someone with musical skill. "Over the Rainbow" practically brought tears to my eyes. For a
good technical tour-de-force, check out the "Theremin Hero" video.
2) if you have electronic skills (i.e. basic soldering) send an email to support@moogmusic.com and
ask for the "Etherwave Hot-Rodding Manual". This document has complete schematics not only for the
Etherwave, but for all sorts of extra things you can do to your Etherwave. It's well worth the read
even if you don't plan on making modifications, because it tells WHY some things are the way they
are (like, why is the pitch antenna a vertical bar, while the volume antenna is a hairpin loop - which
I suspect Dr. Moog found out by asking Leon Termin himself).
3) The included DVD is boring at times - but watch it anyway. Much of it is 20 or 30 years old,
so it's more interesting as history rather than howto. But the comments by Clara Rockmore on Leon
Termin's life are priceless. ("Of course, Leon did not have easy parts. He had what he had, and he
would make it work. It might be somebody frying pan handle. But he would make it work.")
Top reviews from other countries
The build in speaker is weak and even at maximum volume it's not so good, but I plug it in my Roland Micro Cube
or use the headphones and it's great. I like the build in effect as well, as it makes all the difference in the sound. I do have the delay on my amplifier but it's still nice to have it on the instrument for those who use an amplifier without effects.
I feel the theremini is going to help me learn faster and decide if I like it enough to buy a 1000$ etherwave. I would still keep the theremini because of the sounds it can produce, and you can build your own with the provided program too. This is no toy at all, and it is as hard to play as any other theremin, and same technique apply for both instruments.
Of course the technique with the hands is important with both, but I realized the way I calibrate the theremini is also very important so the hand movements do not need to be too wide, just right. With the right calibration, I can manage to get a full scale just by moving my fingers, not having to move my hand much. It's going to take years of practice to become good with this, but it's worth it. I bought a white microphone stand with an adapter and it looks really cool with the theremini that is also white. I am not using the other sounds for now, because I want to focus on the technique and the classic sound, but there is 32 very cool sounds.
This is probably the least intuitive instrument I have played and one must have a very good ear for tone and music because oherwise, without the tuner it would sound very pitchy and out of tune. I think this part is probably the most important thing to have in order to be able to learn that instrument. If a person cannot ear when something is out of tune, then forget about this instrument or any theremin.
