Great product at a good price point. One of the last true values out there. It’s a wired mic, that’s fine.. Don’t be prissy about it. Wireless is not a necessity for “all” people. Every mic I ever saw growing up was wired. If it was good enough for Bruce Springsteen and Martin Luther King, it’s good enough for you doing much less important things.
Those of you who are audio engineers and can tell the ever so slight difference between mics and small incremental adjustments in sound levels. Then get the $750 mic that you’ve been looking at.
For people that only have a small budget and aren’t recording or want it to be wireless or to do things with sound regular people don’t even know how to do. This is more than sufficient.
I use mine with a broadcast speaker to share the Gospel of Christ, speaking and for singers to sing and the sound is warm and beautiful. Sounds like it cost 10x more than it did.
SM-48 (this cardioid model being reviewed)
SM-58 (the gold standard cardioid)
SM-58S (the gold standard cardioid with a sliding on/off switch)
BETA 58A (supercardioid)
If I had known, I wouldn't have bought this microphone, it isn't right for my needs but based on the listing and all the great detail it sure sounded like it would the be the right mic for me.
I run a karaoke night and most of the regular female singers don't have a lot of power. They can't use this microphone because it needs too much gain - feedback town - unless I just drop the karaoke music low enough to hear these singers.
I get the best results with the BETA 58A. It is a little sensitive to frequencies to its rear side compared to the SM-58, but unless someone is cupping the mic there is no issue. It sounds absolutely gorgeous, but it costs the same as an SM-58 + an SM-48.
I would say if price is an issue and you're a screamer or you're singing some backup vocals: go for this one, especially if you gig. It's built well. It can take a beating.
If price is somewhat of an issue but the sound matters more get an SM-58. Get the one with the switch only if you need the switch. I use the switch at my table to make quick announcements and not worry about fading or feedback. But the switches do eventually go bad so I never use the switched mics for the singers.
I recommend this assuming it's a good fit for your needs.
If you want to be extra: get the BETA 58A.
If you are on a budget or just want a decent, low-cost mic, why would you buy anything else but this mic at this price?
I bought this to replace one I bought in 1996 for Live Sound Production! That's RUGGED.
Has a little more handling noise than the SM58 but looks just like it. Sound is close in a Live Sound venue.
I have SM 48s, 58s and Beta 58s in my inventory and use the 48 and 58 interchangeably if on a mic stand.
Great for Youth (church) Bands where it won't get as much handling "respect" by budding musicians as a more expensive mic deserves. And at this price, if they DO use it to nail in nails, like the famous SM58, it's cheap to replace ;-).
I bought 6 for our youth. This one is for my personal inventory and for use with HAM radio I specifically wanted a switch for use with an old Bogen PA where I am 100ft from the volume control and need to turn it off between announcements.
