Product Description
The UMI3 is a three-switch foot controller that connects to a computer or tablet via USB and shows up as a MIDI device. By default the pedal acts like a three-note MIDI keyboard but it can be configured to send CC and program change messages as well. The UMI3 is used to start /stop recording or playback in DAWs, turning FX on or off, triggering sounds or loops or anything else that can be mapped via MIDI. The downloadable free innovative Setup Panel also includes a step sequencer that allows for sending different messages from the same foot switch.

The one concern I had from reading other reviews was the sound of the buttons themselves, but I found them actually not to be a problem at all. I live in an apartment where a loud sound on the floor will transfer to the ceiling downstairs, but I found that the UMI3 does not have any clicking sound to the buttons at all. Yes, they do make a sound, but there is no clicking (in contrast to, e.g., the Digitech Whammy pedal), so it's fine to use in a thin-ceiling apartment; furthermore, the buttons do not take any real force to send a MIDI message, so it's still very comfortable to operate barefoot if you like.
It is built very sturdily, and I'm extremely surprised at the feature list for this price point; other manufacturers could take a lesson from Logidy here. This unit even allows for messages to be sent with the release of the buttons, creating a Momentary Mode, assignable to each button individually. The control program can save a static state to the pedal so it can operate without the control program, or you can keep the program open to utilize some interesting and powerful features allowing you to, e.g., create a setup with eight banks selected by the rightmost pedal, each of which changes the programming of the two other pedals.
This unit will accept any Tip Wiper Expression Pedal, further expanding its power, and finally, it seems you can plug in multiple units to the same computer if you need to (although only one can be controlled by the control program at a time). I'm highly impressed, and I'd buy another without any hesitation. Thanks for a very well engineered and quality piece of kit!
First, you have to download the Logidy configuration application from their website. They have an app for Windows and Mac. In the application, you have to configure the buttons to send Control commands. By default it sends Notes. Any control command will work fine. Just pick midi channel that isn't in use and use a different number for each button. Click File > Save to UMI3 and the unit is configured. Super easy.
Second, in Logic, you have to select Option K on the keyboard. This brings up the command list. Find the command you want (e.g. Play), click on it then in the far right bottom of the pop-up window there is a Learn button. Click on that, press the UMI3 button and it is configured. Repeat for all 3 buttons. Super simple setup.
By the way, the UMI3 is not limited to only one control sequence. With their software, you can configure it to send several different midi commands when a button is pressed -- I liken this to a computer macro. press once and do these steps... I haven't personally needed to do this, but I'm sure some of you will need multi-step buttons. It looks fairly straightforward to configure. Their software is basic, but powerful enough to get the job done.
That said, the UMI3 arrived with a non-working button 2. I could have returned it, which would have been a huge hassle, so I opted to take a peak inside to see if I could spot the problem. Sure enough, it was some shoddy soldering work - one of the wires had detached from one of Button 2’s lugs, and appears to have done so due to not using enough solder. Easy, if inconvenient fix.
And that’s ultimately why I gave it 3 stars. If this thing was $30, no big. $80 is a really steep price given what you get. It’s true, it prevented me from having to make my own foot controller and the metal case is sturdy and, sure, it is a niche device, but for $80 I did expect a fully working product without having to do any additional work.
I will say it is much cheaper than the other foot controllers but it does have fewer buttons and overall less configurability. Had I received a working product, I would probably have given it 4 stars, taking off 1 just for the price.
So all in all, it does what I need it to do - not really anything more, but life is better with it than without.
I don't agree with the buttons being too close together, they're actually further than my FCB 1010... I haven't had any issues with that, but if you wear clunky boots at gigs then yeah, you'll have issues. I do wish the release and 8 programmable actions would function when the app is closed, but that's not a big deal for my purpose. I really like the versatility of the commands, and how you can program one button to change functionality of the other two (although I'm not using it that way).
I also plan to use it in the studio, to control record and rewind functions on my studio DAW, so I can do hands free recording of guitar. Haven't set that up yet but I'm sure it will be easy.
