First, though I've found some short comings I am giving the PA600 5 stars. The things that it does correctly, it does them so well that I can honestly give it that rating even with some small issues. Here's my list of pros/cons:
Pros:
Sound - I primarily use it connected to the same studio system as my other synth's. It sounds great. I wasn't expecting the onboard speakers to sound good, but they are very rich and deep and you hear a lot of detail.
Voices/Patches - this is the area of deepest concern for me. Would the PA600 have sound that sounded toyish as some would have you think about arrangers? No "toys" here. The patches are brilliantly done and many of these have either the DNC or RX feature which completely adds to the realism of the sounds.
Editing - you can create your own user patches, performances, styles, which leads me to the next one
Recording - You can create new styles from the existing styles or by creating them in an external DAW. In fact I was surprised I was doing this 5 minutes after first setting up! In addition to styles you can create songs, plus the system has a 16 track sequencer built in.
Flexibility - There are many ways to set up the combinations of parameters, track settings, effects, etc to get the sound you are looking for.
Variety - After viewing demonstrations I got the impression that Latin Ballroom was the only types of styles this thing specialized in, but that couldn't be further from the truth. So many different genres of music, rhythm patterns, backing arrangements, with spot on realism. You can play just about any style of music you wish to.
I really liked the idea of the pads, which are basically single track variations that can be programmed to play along with your styles in sync with the key. There are 4 pads in each style and you can start them individually. Really helps when looping through or just playing around. In addition it has a chord sequencer for on the fly looping. With that you can set up a chord progression then trigger it to play as you are playing a particular style. What's cool about it is it frees you up to play with both hands to play with.
Cons:
There aren't very many cons but here are some:
Chord sequencer - I mentioned liking this feature because you can loop and play along with yourself. However, the user interface is clunky and I found myself not timing the recording of the loop the way I meant to. It would be nicer if there were a single set of dedicated buttons for this feature and if you had the ability to save this with a given Style and performance setup.
Track Editing - I haven't found this yet, but it would be nice to be able to access the midi notes in a given track and make changes after recording to speed up the process. This is in case you fat finger a chord or miss. You could finish the phrase or passage then go back and tweek it. You are allowed to go back using the step sequence and change the chord progression and even audition a new band (ie style), so correcting a mistaken note and not having to record the track again would be nice. This could be that I'm just used to using a workstation and DAW.
So far that's it when it comes to Cons, I'm only a 5 days in, but I'm completely happy with this instrument.
What have I been able to do in the 5 days:
-create a new song
-have an extended jam session in various music genre's using the chord sequencer and pads
-create new styles from scratch
-import new data into my newly created styles using midi files I built in my DAW (I'm using Cubase)
-create performances to use with the new styles
-Have a lot of fun playing music, which is what is supposed to be the end result of getting any keyboard, synth, workstation, etc.
You can play with the included accompaniment tracks in multiple genres right out of the box, which is a kick in the pants, but when playing with a live band I love that you can set up the next sound live without affecting the current setup until you are ready to go with it.
I'm still learning this thing... but there's a whole recording studio in this keyboard with a seemingly unending cacaphony of layered sounds without any dropout at all. Go KORG! You won't regret it.
PA600 is a user friendly. I watched instructions in provided DVD, and known how to use the PA600 in less than an hour. I also like the built in introduction and ending of rhythms that add flavors. I have PA 600 for around 2 weeks, my love with it is growing.
