The fan is quiet with a "tone" that doesn't irritate me when playing quietly. There is a built in compressor that smooths over the inconsistencies of my playing technique. I still utilize an effects board and the amp has a built in mix control for the effects. I can add some distortion mixed with the original signal into the power amp to add some fuzz all the while keeping the depth and smoothness of the native signal from my guitar. The mid-tone control and hi/low boosts give me the flexibility to adjust the personality of the amp and have fun with the harmonics. I can recreate the tone of the combos I have grown accustomed to as of late. I can get the rumble of a Peavy, the snap of a Hartke, or the bottom end of a Genz and I love it. Still haven't quite found the tone I had with my little Orange combo but I'll keep playing with it.
Be sure to buy a good speaker cable. A standard guitar cable to too light to carry the high amperage the amp sends to a speaker.
Final note: the mute switch is great. I'm so used to putting my tube guitar amps into standby when I need a break so the Mute button, allowing the amp to stay on, just feels right. I realize it's solid state but some of you know what I mean.
Returned for refund and will try 500 watt Hartke and hope for better dependability....
Bah! Well, these things happen - sometimes you just get a bad unit. I had it happen with, oh, let's call it a quart of milk once. Opened it just hours after picking it up at the store and it'd gone bad. Oddly I wasn't quite as upset over the milk though. With tears in my eyes I packed the PF-500 back up, filled out the "Return to Amazon" paperwork, and rather miserably awaited a replacement.
A few weeks later I was sitting at the table moodily drinking a glass of chocolate milk when the UPS guy dropped off The Package. Again I gathered up my bass and my wife, and with awe in my voice announced the very awesome awesomeness of the Ampeg sound, hit a note, and - WONDERFULLNESS! The tone and volume were exactly what I wanted! I was, indeed, a happy camper. With a loud-@ss bass.
And in the past five years I've practiced with the same setup - the PF-500 with a PF-115 cabinet coupled with an old Hartke 4x10 I had from a previous rig - and it's sounded wonderful! I recently started gigging again and have absolutely loved the tone and versatility of the amp. BUT...
But I have a gig tonight and the amp isn't working, leaving me in a rather sour pickle indeed. Yesterday I went to practice a bit, set my chocolate milk down on the table, plugged in my beloved Ibanez, powered everything up, and... Nothing. Not even a buzz. Nary a hum. Just the steady, unblinking, rather mocking stare of the dreaded "Fault" light. Bah!
In a panic I slammed my milk and started doing research - it turns out that PF-500s seem to do this rather often, sadly. I saw a comment in a forum that said, "It's odd, you never hear of the 800s doing this, why do the 500s?" So now I'm in a jam - I've found a spare amp I can use for my gig tonight, but in the long run do I try to get the PF-500 fixed? (I'm NOT a tech, in fact I wear shoes with velcro straps on 'em on account of the intricate complexity of laces.) Or do I bite the bullet and get the 800? I dunno... I'm just a poor boy from a poor family, someone must spare my life from this monstrosity of a decision.
So, the mixed review. First amp arrived DOA, second amp was wonderful indeed for five good quality years, but I'm in a rather bad mood as it died on me at a particularly bad time financially.
Buy a USA Ampeg. (St Louis Music or Magnavox).......not these. Sorry
