Like you, I read a number of reviews before purchasing. You may have seen the same comments I did. "The manual is terrible", "I don't know if this thing is doing anything", "Once it fills up all it's slots, it messes with the sound", and "It adds a hiss to the sound".
I've used Behringer mixers for years, and they are cost-effective, even when they develop problems after a few years. (Usually some white noise in one channel, indicating a connection going bad.) I can tell you that if you get a unit that adds noise when you first buy it, you got a bad copy and should return it for replacement. Otherwise, Behringer products are generally sonically pristine.
As far as the manual, the Quick Start guide that comes printed in the box is like most. Comprised more of heiroglyphs than text, with the text in multiple languages for all markets. I hate these. The full manual, which you can download from Behringer's website, is completely different. A single language, and very clear. In fact, this is the BEST equipment manual I've ever seen. Not only does it tell you what all the buttons and knob do, it also tells you how to use the thing. And the English version of the manual was clearly written by a native English speaker. No awkward phrasing here.
Both manuals suggest that you can turn this thing on, turn the knob until it shows a '3' (to use Preset #3), and you can leave it to do it's thing. This is exactly what I did and it worked great.
So, I run the sound board for a local band, and we are always setting up in a new space. The gig we had last night was in a venue we had been in a year before, and had been the WORST location in terms of room acoustics. We were fighting feedback every which way. Not last night, though. I plugged this thing in, set it to #3 preset, and never heard a single frequency feeding back through the monitors nor the main speakers.
Now, here's the kicker. We have 7 vocal mics on stage. 2 monitors. And 4 main speakers. And ALL of this was handled by ONE unit. Monitors were run through one channel, and mains through the other.
So why are some reviewers saying they don't know if this thing does anything? My best guess is that they turn it on, leave it at the default setting (which literally does nothing until you program it), and haven't read the manual to know you're supposed to select a preset based on your use case.
As the night went on (this was a 4-hour gig), I kept watching the lights indicating how many feedback frequencies had been caught and handled. Right away, there were 3 on the monitors. Soon, there were 5. Later, there was 6. The channel handling the mains caught 2 during sound check, which for this band is playing 2 of their songs while I adjust the settings on the board, starting with a set of defaults that usually work.
By the end of the night, this unit had caught and processed at least 12 frequencies in the monitors, and even more from the mains. (Still have to figure out why there were more from the mains.) In any case, I paid very close attention to what was happening with the sound when all 12 filters had been set to see if the reviews saying it messed up the sound after that might have been talking about. Didn't hear any problems whatsoever. Once it caught 12 frequencies in the mains, the next thing I saw was one of the earlier slots blinking, indicating that it was ready to catch a new frequency. Some time later, the blinking light turned solid, indicating that it caught a new feedback frequency.
At some point, I'll start experimenting with the other presets and settings, but for now, the "dummy mode" preset #3 works great. BTW, this is the preset where everything is completely on Auto.
The next preset I plan to use is #2, which catches and holds several frequencies in a "single shot" mode (meaning that once a frequency is caught, it won't let go until the unit is turned off), with the remaining slots in Auto mode. Personally, I think this will be more useful than full auto, although it really depends on the specific situation.
The Behringer FBQ 1000 is on each and every monitor. When a performer stepped up to the Mike and put it in the sound hole, the feedback lasted .2 of a second, just like every other performer generated feedback incident.
Easy to setup, compact, lightweight and, most of all, effective. It is the feedback killer. And when the FOH runs through the FBQ1000, the result is the same. Every time we add stage monitors we add FBQ1000 channels to protect our performers.
