Jacques Féréol Mazas (1782-1849) was a French composer, conductor,violinist, and pedagogue who is best remembered for a set of 75Études mélodiques et progressives, op. 36 published in three parts:Études speciales, Études brillantes, and Études d-artistes. Viola pedagogueand orchestral musician, Lawrence Wheeler, has meticulously edited aselect 33 études from Book One (1-30) and Book Two (31-56), chosenfor their musical and developmental benefit. The études selected areall appropriate audition repertoire. Fingerings have been adapted forthe viola and clef changes reflect modern practice. Each étude showsalternate fingerings in parentheses and suggests alternate bowings. Awelcome new addition to the teaching repertoire for Viola.

He is best remembered fora set of 75 Études mélodiques et progressives, Op. 36, consisting ofthree parts: Études speciales, Études brillantes and Études d-artistes.This book is a selection of 33 etudes from Book One (Nos.1–30) and Book Two (Nos. 31–56). The etudes included hereare those that are most applicable for study by the modernviolist. Those etudes not selected are technical exercises oflimited musical variety. The study and teaching of these etudesshould prove invaluable for developing and maintainingtechnical skills and musicianship. They may be studied inany order, according to the needs of the player. Any would beexcellent choices for region and state auditions.This edition is based on the original edition for violin. Greatcare has been given to ensure the accuracy of notes, rhythmsand dynamics.
