MICROPHONE / Lamp Microphones /
Warm Audio Wa67
The original 1967 mic has become one of the most sought-after and used studio mics of its time, recording a vast collection of some of the most memorable songs from over the past 50 years: classics from artists as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Temptations and Nirvana! Designed around an EF86 pentode tube and featuring the same smooth, velvety tone as the original, the WA-67 is perfectly capable of recording the types of sounds you present to it, and it can quickly establish itself as the benchmark for vocals, guitars, percussion and drums, pianos, brass and strings. Warm Audio is passionate about unique studio equipment and takes its responsibility to customers very seriously. Warm Audio spends a lot of time and effort to get as close as possible to the heart and soul of the original design without compromising on quality. The original circuit has been recreated using high-end components so that nothing disturbs the magic of the lamps. The WA-67 reproduces the sound and spirit of the original in a quality product at an affordable price. A microphone can have quality components, if the capsule is not good, nothing will be: which is to say how important it can have. Aware of this reality, Warm Audio absolutely wanted to recreate the capsule of the original, taking care to obtain the same performance, the same frequency response and the same character as the original. To achieve this, it was necessary to ensure that the configuration of the holes was identical, but also that the whole assembly was made of brass (including the mounting rings), exactly like the original model. It takes more time and is more expensive than using several types of materials, but it was essential to do the best for this microphone. The results speak for themselves: the WA-67 has absolutely exceptional sound! The EF-86 lamp is well known in the sound world with its advantageous characteristics for all audio sources, and this is one of the reasons why the original is still sought after (and this is why some manufacturers of current audio products use it in their own microphones and in their very expensive preamps). Warm Audio was aware of the importance of achieving absolutely flawless results in the WA-67. To accentuate and complete the bespoke capsule and EF86 lamp, Warm Audio used high-end components to complete their version of the original circuit. The WA-87 has high bandwidth polystyrene capacitors and Wima polypropylene capacitors, as well as a Solen output capacitor. Another important element in a tube design: Warm Audio used a large core Lundahl transformer made to measure in Sweden. It plays an important role in the smooth high frequency response and grandiose three-dimensional sound of the WA-67. In addition, this microphone comes in the form of a beautiful body and a nickel-plated brass protective grille, which ensures great strength, additional protection against any handling noise and optimal audio performance. Last but not least, the quality of the 7-pin cable (which connects the tube microphone to its power supply) is also of utmost importance: it carries audio signals and voltage across different pins and therefore plays a key role in microphone performance. This is the reason why Warm Audio has teamed up with Swiss manufacturer Gotham Audio in order to use their high-end GAC-7 cable with the WA-67. This special cable is an integral part of the sound and performance of the microphone and is the final touch to the WA-67 system.
