Par MUHLY NICO. This short work is written for a chamber ensemble of flute, clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), violin and cello. It takes its title from a man named James Drown, who in the early 19th century spent 5 months on a remote island in the South Atlantic. To mark the passing time, he carved a notch in a stick for each day he was there - the Calendar Stick, as it is now known, is displayed in the permanent collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
