The sound is amazing. The length of the notes and decibels obviously depend on the length and force that you blow into the mouthpiece with. If you've got some powerful lungs you could wake up your whole house with this thing or at least jam with your friends on an acoustic set.
This also comes with a handy case that zips up and also features two pockets for the mouthpieces and whatever else you might want to take with you on your play session. The case is durable and I've used to to store my melodica in a storage unit and behind my acoustic guitar case without any breakage or visible wear on the case (or my melodica of course).
This instrument is made out of hard plastic and seems durable all on its own. I've let some of my buddies play this things after a few drinks and as you can imagine they didn't treat it with the delicacy or poise I find myself treating it with. This has been dropped on tile and hardwood floor and there's not even a scratch on the thing. Amazing and affordable. It sounds as warm and cute as you'd expect a melodica to sound.
I highly recommend this fun little instrument for anyone from children to serious musicians. This is a great gift for someone you love or even yourself. This was a great self-birthday-present to myself and I haven't regretted it.
UPDATE 11/23/13: I have upgraded my rating from three to four stars after more work with the Hohner 32B, especially in the light of its current ridiculously low price of $24.99. It's a very easy melodica to play. I also checked its tuning. Almost all melodicas are tuned a bit sharp, to the standard of A-443 (the middle A on the keyboard at 443 Hz.). The Hohner's tuning is closer to A-440, which is the "true north" of tuning. I'm not saying that's good or that it's bad. It's a matter of personal preference if it matters to you at all. For most of us, what counts is whether our melodica is in tune with itself. Like almost every melodica, the 32B doesn't come from the factory very well tuned, and the tuning will vary from one 32B to another. Consequently, reviewer complaints about the tuning of the melodica they bought do not mean much. You might even feel that tuning imperfection adds to the charm of this kind of instrument. The solution if you want better tuning is to learn how to tune your melodica, for which you can find good instructions at melodicas.com and even better instructions at melodicaworld.com. Harmonica enthusiasts tell us that if you're serious about the harmonica you need to get comfortable taking it apart, doing maintenance, and tuning. I think the same goes for the melodica. But you can derive a lot of pleasure from the melodica without getting so serious and without being unduly fastidious about its tuning.
