My old mic was fine; I was looking for a new foam cover for it and saw a few of them that were four for $6, etc., but yeah, for not much more, I just bought a whole new mic, and it came with an awesomely redesigned shock mount! I'm not really a huge fan of the gold plating on this one, but covered in black and looking at my picture, it looks really professional; it looks awesome. That was the only problem with my old one; my old one just wasn't in very good cosmetic condition anymore.
Now, the quality. Some people might occasionally get a bad one. If you get a bad one, just send it back to Amazon and swap it for another. The same, if it works, it's going to work forever, and if it sounds good, it's going to sound awesome! But, you do need some kind of interface. Now, there are a few of these that I've seen that are about $30 or $40 with an interface. I'm not sure of the quality of those interfaces, but I have a Behringer interface that cost me about $70 a long time ago, and it makes it sound like a million dollars! Please look on YouTube and find reviews from people who have great speaking and singing voices that can really wring the neck of these mics! This mic is not going to hold you back! If you are coming from any kind of cheap microphone, and by cheap I mean up to a $70 microphone, then this microphone will blow you away!

One thing that's a bit annoying is that they included an XLR to 3.5mm cable, which in my opinion is pretty much worthless. You will need a Phantom Power Supply and an external sound card / audio interface to take full advantage of this microphone, and I really wish they'd just included an XLR cable with this mic since you will need two of them anyway (one to go to the Phantom, and the other to go to your interface). If you are just connecting to an external sound card without an XLR jack, it will work well enough for that, but you are best off using an XLR interface if you can get your hands on one at a reasonable price.
The sound on this thing isn't perfect but it's good, which shouldn't be a surprise since it's pretty cheap. I got a little bit of an odd "fishbowl" effect during my initial tests with it, however I realized I could reduce greatly this by positioning the microphone upright rather than pointing it directly at my actors. I also highly reccomend that you invest another $6 into a Dragon pop filter-- it's a small amount of money to pay to ensure that you will get the best quality you can out of this mic.
Overall I'd say that while I wouldn't use this thing in a Hollywood production, if you want an entry-level microphone that will deliver decent quality audio recordings for a project, this thing is an infinitely better option than that Rock Band microphone you have buried in your closet. It's also a fine option for people who are interested in streaming and podcasts.
