We're sprinting the opposite way

Most companies try to appear larger than life

You would drive right by our woodshop without realizing it. "Nondescript" is putting it politely, but inside is a totally different tune.

Pallets of planed Tennessee walnut, solid birch and organized work stations make this place a drool fest for any avid wood worker.

And we're lucky to have people on our team that feel this way.

We own and operate this special corner of The Earth ourselves which allows us to fine-tune and experiment with every last detail that goes into crafting exceptional percussion instruments and mallets.

On the surface they may seem simple, but a lot of care goes into delivering you fantastically great feeling mallets that play consistently and with exceptional sound. From our facility to our materials and, most importantly, our people, every element plays a huge role.

The one size fits all approach

We made these mallets for everyone—professional orchestral percussionists, community band members, teachers, sound healing therapy practitioners, students, casual players—you name it.

Using the finest materials around with decades of experience from our small crew (most of whom are pictured above), their balance and response are made to lift your playing in virtually any situation.

Simple done extremely well

We love clean, elegant and high-class designs. We're sort of obsessed with them. That's why we developed these mallets to really look the part before you even pick them up to play.

Their hand-stained birch handles with delicately rounded edges and precision placed heads are accented by a small rubber sleeve bearing the Timber Drum logo. A subtle reminder of our "Made in America" distinction.

Head material—where to use

The perfect mallets for percussion instruments like bells, xylophones, energy chimes woodblocks or crotales, these white hard polymer heads deliver a bright and cutting attack note.

They are perfect when you need a sound that carries through with precise definition.

The heads measure 1" in diameter, which is an industry standard size. Their weight is proportioned exactly to the handles, giving the mallets perfect balance.

Handle material

We use solid birch for the handles and round the tips for a comfortable grip. Birch provides a lightweight and balanced touch with plenty of durability.

Taking the appearance of the mallets a step further, we hand-stain the handles to bring out the natural wood grain and darken the look.

Handle length is 14 1/4" which is long enough to give you effortless reach on any instrument while always feeling balanced no matter what you're playing on or where you grip them. Total mallet is 15 1/4" long.

Made in the U.S.A.

Really it's "Made by Penelope" or "Made by Noah".

We keep ourselves to a small, highly dedicated crew of men and women who love what they do. There aren't a ton of us, but we really know what we're doing, and we have total control over the whole process.

Most of the Timber Drum Co. crew are musicians as well as highly skilled woodworkers, so we know exactly what's demanded from a solid pair of percussion mallets. And when we feel we've hit the mark on a production run, we package the mallets so they're ready to ship to you.

Best "Low Cost" Plastic Mallets
I was in the market for some cheap mallets for my percussion students to use without breaking the bank. After a quick search i discovered a few options for hard plastic and rubber and got all four to test out. These are the models i got to compare. Timber Drum Co - T2HP (Hard Plastic) Timber Drum Co - TMD2 (Rubber) Shappy "Bell Mallets" (Rubber) Fanrel "Glockenspiel Mallets" (Plastic?)Right off the bat i noticed a ton of differences. The Shappy and Fanrel Mallets came from China. That right there should tell you the quality isn't going to be as good as even their pictures online looked like the were copying the American made mallets. The Chinese ones came in cheap plastic bags (one wasn't even sealed). The Timber Drum Co mallets are Made in the USA and arrived in a sturdy protective tube (see photos). The differences between the mallets where even more noticeable. Both the Shappy and Fanrel had unfinished wood handles and oversized mallet heads that were too big for the instruments my students play on. Nice try guys ;-). The mallet head quality was really rough (see Photos). The Shappy "rubber" mallets were basically plastic mallets and too hard for the instruments i would use rubber mallets on.The Timber Drum Co Mallets were obviously the higher quality option. Both the hard plastic and rubber options had finished wood handles that were the perfect size for a comfortable grip. Each mallet head was the perfect size and sound that i was looking for. This made sense when i realized the Timber Drum Co mallets were made in the USA. The Shappy/Fanrel were both made in China (according to the plastic bag they came in) and seems like they were just trying to make something that looked like a mallet to sell.Basically, the Timber Drum Co mallets are the best low cost option for mallets on Amazon. I will be recommending them to all my students from now on.*******U P D A T E*****************I purchased these mallets and wrote a review back in 2019. I actually liked them so much that i decided to get a few sets more for my students in 2020. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the company made the mallets even better! Dowel quality is improved with smooth rounded ends. They seem even more sturdy an added a logo. I can't say this enough, Timber Drum Co makes the best "low cost" mallet on Amazon. See new photos for the changes.
