Decent little system for the price

Decent little system for the price
I purchased this Rockville RPG2X10 and a Rockville 10S powered sub, to begin playing around with digital DJing as a hobby. The rest of my setup includes a Native Instruments Traktor S2 MK3, as well as a Mackie mix8 mixer, and a Pyle PS1000 power sequencer/conditioner, as well as an i5 HP pavilion laptop and Samson SR8 studio headphones.First of all, realize this is very low end audio equipment, and I have no intention of using this equipment beyond parties on my patio, local block parties, or perhaps a friend/family members birthday event. I own a lot of other high end audio equipment, including several Native instruments pieces of equipment, JL subs, Mackie speakers, Cerwin Vega 15in loud speakers, several akai devices and Behringer audio interfaces and amps/mixers and some Alesis instruments.I wanted to setup a little area in my office space at home, to dedicate to messing around with traktor and learning some dj-ing skills. This package had everything I needed to do that, so after putting some time in on it, here is my review:Packaging: Everything came nicely packed and secured with no visible external damage to the box.The speakers feel solid, and have a nice carpet covering on them and decent little rubber feet, if not using the stands. The mics and XLR cables, leave a lot to be desired, I tossed the cables that came with them and used my own XLR, as the packaged ones basically fell apart on me, and would suggest using a better quality XLR cable. The mics them self are poor quality, but in my setup, they are fine, as I do minimal MC'ing, and am not using them for any extensive vocals. You do need to get very very close to the mics for them to properly pick up your voice when speaking, almost touching them with your lips. If you plan to do extensive vocals, I would suggest investing in better mics, but for just the basics they do they job, but that's all, pretty low end, yet still functional. The amp seems to be powerful enough to push both speakers without a problem, but the mids/highs on these speakers is very high, so high that even lowering them to 0 on the Amps EQ, is still not enough for my taste, and that's why I am using the mackie mix8 mixer to adjust those mids/highs before I even connect the Line IN signal to the Amp, and would suggest using a mixer or eq in front of the Amp to give more over all sound control, as the Amps equlizer is pretty limited and not enough to round out the sound, at least not to my taste. The over all bass is ok, but I added the 10s powered sub, because I generally play hip hop style music, and wanted harder bass, perhaps this is not necessary for some folks, but for my taste, once again, that is the sound and style I am aiming for and didn't feel the bass was enough out of the speakers alone. This is not a bad thing, in my opinion the job of these loud speakers is not to provide deep levels of bass, but a more balanced sound, adding a sub is the next step, if you need those harder hits and lows. Again the highs were too high for me, and had to address that with the mixer/eq as mentioned above, other then that the sound was solid.I have run these speakers and the sub at high volume for several hours, and had no issues, the Amp never even felt hot to the touch, and seems to provide consistent power with no problem. I should also note that I am not using the TRS cables that came with the system. I am using my own, not that there is anything wrong with them, just in my setup everything is condensed down to one desk, and those cables were much longer, so I am using some 3ft TRS cables i had around, just to keeps things tidy with less spaghetti. My mixer is connected to the Line-in of the Rockville Amp via a 1/4in TRS cable, I have also tried connecting to the RCA's which work just as well, but TRS was my preference in this case. When the Amps is powered up and connected to the speakers, there is a small hiss that can be heard, even with nothing connected to the line in and the Amp and the main volume and line levels set at 0, I can still hear it, up to about 5 feet from the speakers. Although this may be due to the electrical outlet in my house, even with all devices connected into the same wall outlet via my PS1000 power conditioner unit, the hiss still exists. The good news, is that once I play some music and turn up the gain on my traktor controller, the hiss does not seem to scale with the music volume. I have several other amps/receivers/mixers connected in this same room, and do not experience this hiss. Again, with low quality audio equipment like this Amp, it is expected there would not be a perfectly clean signal. But in my case, I am keeping the line level of the Amp at around 11 o'clock and the Amps main volume at 12 o'clock with no additional adjustments. I have the gain and main out on my mackie mixer feeding the amp, both dialed into 1 o'clock and keep them in place as well, and then use my traktor controllers master volume control to make all adjustments to over all volume. This seems to provide me a pretty decent result and there is no sign of hiss or distortion when playing music, as the amplified sound appears to over take any underlying hiss.Over all this is very very cheap system, and you get what you pay for, this is a functional unit, and when adding in a simple mixer/eq to balance out the sound a little better along with a sub it's pretty darn good for the money.I would recommended this to anyone that wants to utilize it at a hobby level, or perhaps a church or similar setup where budget is a concern. A single decent mid (not even high end) DJ/PA speaker costs more then this entire system, look at the mackie thump 12A, this single speaker is $300, and would be considered entry level for real DJ/PA gig. To get an entire system for the price it's well worth it.Over all, this is a great little system for the price, but if you ever decide to get more serious you will be investing in higher end gear, but this system has a place in the entry level/hobby space and I am happy with the product
